Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA)

Overview

An NDIS Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) is an essential tool for individuals engaging with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). These assessments provide a thorough evaluation of an individuals ability to perform daily tasks, such as gross and fine motor skills, communication, self-care, domestic tasks, and cognitive functioning. The insights gathered during the assessment are vital for NDIS plan applications, home and living supports, plan reviews, new customers to the NDIS, and appeals.

Who Is an FCA For?

An FCA may be appropriate if you or your child needs support with:- Applying for NDIS.- Plan reassessment.- Increasing therapy hours.- Accessing support workers.- SIL/ILO applications.- School supports.- Daily living independence.- Emotional regulation, social skills, sensory needs.- Executive functioning or organisational skills.

What to Expect During a Functional Capacity Assessment:

We guide you through each step and explain everything along the way.
  • Step 1.
    Initial Review
We start by reviewing the information you’ve shared and discussing why an FCA is being requested. This helps us understand your situation before any assessments begin.
  • Step 2.
    In-Depth Discussion
We take time to talk through daily routines, challenges, and goals across home, school, work, and community life, so the assessment reflects real-world needs.
  • Step 3.
    Practical Observations
We observe everyday tasks relevant to your goals, such as self-care, communication, motor skills, or community participation, in a supportive and respectful way.
  • Step 4.
    Comprehensive Report
We compile a detailed FCA report outlining strengths, support needs, and clear recommendations to support NDIS planning, reviews, or funding requests.
  • Step 5.
    Report Review & Next Steps
You’ll receive a draft report to review and discuss. We’re happy to answer questions and explain recommendations before finalising the report.

Cost of Functional Capacity Assessments:

The cost of a Functional Capacity Assessment varies depending on the complexity of your case and the scope of the evaluation. Standard Assessment: Report writing is charged at the standard therapy rate of $193.99 per hour, as outlined in the NDIS Price Guide 2024-2025 . A typical assessment requires 10-15 hours, including travel, in-person assessments, and correspondence related to the evaluation. Complex Cases: For more complex cases, where the assessment spans multiple environments (e.g., home, school, work, community etc.) or involves consultations with additional professionals (e.g., doctors, Speech Therapists, Physiotherapists etc.), more time may be required. It is important to allow adequate time for the assessment process to ensure a comprehensive and accurate report. At Flare Therapy, we aim to have a completed FCA within 2-3 weeks of the Initial Review.
