Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA)
Overview
An NDIS Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) is an essential tool for individuals engaging with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). These assessments provide a thorough evaluation of an individuals ability to perform daily tasks, such as gross and fine motor skills, communication, self-care, domestic tasks, and cognitive functioning. The insights gathered during the assessment are vital for NDIS plan applications, home and living supports, plan reviews, new customers to the NDIS, and appeals.
What to Expect During a Functional Capacity Assessment:
Initial Review:
The assessment begins with an initial review of the information you have provided about why you're seeking the evaluation. This includes gathering details such as your medical history and any background information that is relevant to the assessment.During this time, you'll also have the opportunity to share your goals and expectations, ensuring that we understand your specific needs from the outset.
In-depth Discussion:
We will engage in a detailed conversation about your daily routines and any challenges you face. This may include questions about your home life, work, school, and community activities. The goal is to gain a thorough understanding of your needs, abilities, and goals for increasing independence. This discussion will provide context for the practical assessments to follow, ensuring that we focus on the areas most relevant to you.
Practical Observations:
The assessment will include practical observations where we will evaluate how you perform certain tasks related to fine motor skills (e.g., writing, using utensils) and gross motor skills (e.g., walking, lifting).
You may be asked to complete functional tasks or answer questions that provide further insight into how you manage different activities, both at home and in the community. These observations will help us assess your abilities in real-life scenarios.

Comprehensive Report:
After gathering all the necessary information, we will compile a detailed report that outlines your current functional capacity and provides tailored recommendations for support and strategies.
This report will focus on areas where you may require assistance—whether at home, in the workplace, or in the community—and will suggest the recommendations and supports that could help you achieve your NDIS goals.

Report Review:
Once the report is complete, you will receive a draft for review. This is your chance to provide feedback, ask questions, and ensure that the report accurately reflects your unique needs and goals.
We encourage open communication during this stage to ensure the final report is a true representation of your functional capacity and aligns with your expectaions.
Cost of Functional Capacity Assessments:
The cost of a Functional Capacity Assessment varies depending on the complexity of your case and the scope of the evaluation.
Standard Assessment:
Report writing is charged at the standard therapy rate of $193.99 per hour, as outlined in the NDIS Price Guide 2024-2025 .
A typical assessment requires 10-15 hours, including travel, in-person assessments, and correspondence related to the evaluation.
Complex Cases:
For more complex cases, where the assessment spans multiple environments (e.g., home, school, work, community etc.) or involves consultations with additional professionals (e.g., doctors, Speech Therapists, Physiotherapists etc.), more time may be required.
It is important to allow adequate time for the assessment process to ensure a comprehensive and accurate report. At Flare Therapy, we aim to have a completed FCA within 2-3 weeks of the Initial Review.
